Middle School

Spiritual:

These young men and women continue to grow with the opportunity to prepare and receive the Sacrament of Confirmation in grade 8. The grade 8 class presents the Living Stations in Church during Holy Week. Middle School Students participate in service projects under the guidance of the school's Campus Minister.

Academics:

In order to implement the theme of 'Hands on.....Minds on', our daily lessons include project based learning and the integration of technology. A Site visit to the Statue of Liberty, provide another means for hands-on learning. We provide active learning experiences such as skill based math placement, lab based science classes, studio art classes and an interdisciplinary research paper/presentation.

Integrated Language Arts

At Saint Raphael School, the Integrated Language Arts Program focuses on connections between Literature and written expression as dictated by the Diocesan Curriculum. In Middle School, students use a combination of both Short Stories and Novel studies to expand fluency and form a deeper understanding of an author’s perspective. In addition, students broaden their knowledge of grammar as they create a variety of essays culminating in a Research Paper in their 8th grade year.

Social Studies

Middle School Social Studies at Saint Raphael School helps students develop a deeper view of Historical elements ranging from Ancient Civilizations through World War II as prescribed by the Diocesan Curriculum. Teachers use a combination of notes to understand concepts and a hands-on approach to help students form understandings that reach beyond the Social Studies classroom.

Science

Middle School Science is integrated and students experience a lab activity once a week on average. Each year students have the option to participate in a dissection (specimens are based upon grade level). 7th grade students create their own news/weather report and 8th grade students explore space by creating a creature based on a planets’ environment.

Extra Curricular Activities:

Leadership opportunities increase through serving as Student Council Officers and planning Middle School activities such as dances and service projects. The students in eighth grade enjoy an annual class trip to a Broadway play.
